This May post is from another of my blogs. I just noticed that it was not posted in this blog so here it is:
Jude posted a note Head-Fi regarding Tyll’s announcement that he is retiring from Innerfidelity and more interestingly from the headphone community. As one of the originals it is hard to underestimate his impact on the headphone community and HiFi in general. It will be interesting to see how the void his absence creates is filled. The link to Jude’s note is below. I also added the link to Tyll’s YouTube video where he announces his retirement and his explanation of why now. He will be missed!
I can fully understand Tyll’s motivations as I have just gone through the same transition. The “been there and done that” gets overwhelming and you just want to do something else. After years of battles you find that there is a significant amount of repetition. After fighting the same battle multiple times it gets tiring. For each battle you know upfront the amount of effort, emotional drain and the eventual outcome. You arrive at a point where you are unwilling to invest that emotional effort. There are also the many things you couldn’t do while working. You regret the missed sporting events your kids were in. The vacations you didn’t take or in my case vacations where I was on a phone with work for much of it. All of this just gets overwhelming and you just say “F” it. Good for Tyll to make it out intact!
Retirement is a huge transition but for those who have the luxury of planning for it the transition can be smoother but no less dramatic. Hopefully, all goes well with Tyll’s transition as well as his mastering of the ukulele.
