Here is an interesting interview with Paul Barton of PSB discussing the psychological analysis around people’s perception of what sounds good. He also discusses the concept of what PSB calls “room feel”. This in essence is the quantification and adjustment necessary in headphones to reproduce music as if it the sound was coming from floor speakers. Paul states that this is important since engineers and recording artists craft their product with the assumption that you will listening to their music in a room using floor speakers and not headphones. Therefore, if you don’t adjust the headphone listening experience to account for the room’s influence on the music then the listener isn’t experiencing the music the way the artist intended.
